Things I do

Running

I'm a runner. I tend to like running long and slow on trails. I particularly enjoy trail racing. There's a camaraderie in trail racing that doesn't seem to permeate other sports that I have participated in. Cycling and road running are quite a bit more "cut throat" in comparison to trail running. That said, my fastest road marathon is just over 3 hours and 30 minutes, and really, that is a number that needs to fall, perhaps this Fall...

Cooking

I'm a hobby chef. My favorite cuisines are Italian and Mexican. A simple tomato sauce with onion and butter is so easy to make, and so much better than anything one can buy, it's borderline criminal to buy sauce in a jar (the linked recipe says to discard the onion - that's wholly incorrect: eat it; it ends up so sweet and delicious...). Well prepared refried beans and rice are a wonderful thing too. The recipe I use comes from Rick Bayless's first(?) book Authentic Mexican.

Beyond that, I enjoy baking bread. These days I'm making sourdough breads. My son and I raised several cultures, the most recent is named Zip. I had my technique pretty well drilled in Bolivia, but I have discovered that the flour available in the States is of a significantly different character and I am having to adapt my recipes to the flour.

Photography

I have been taking pictures all of my life. I had a darkroom in high school and I quickly adopted digital when it became affordable. These days I shoot a Nikon D7100 and prefer a 35mm prime. I do raw developing in Darktable and my post is in GIMP. I will implement a gallery shortly, but for now enjoy what's below.
